My Name Will Be Forgotten
Someday, my name will be forgotten
I don’t know whether to be comforted
Or whether to be scared
Some days - the days I make mistakes
I take heart in the fact that some day
I will no longer exist
In their memory
Or in anyone’s memory
I will be able to truly rest
No longer dealing in the mortifying experience of being known
Some days - the beautiful pain days
I think of the love my grandpa had for his mother
And how little I know of her, now
I think of the fond memories I have with him
And the fact that my son doesn’t get to know him
I think that all that we have are stories.
And someday, those stories will stop being told.
And someday, my name will be forgotten.
